The Lords of Dogtown movie centers around a group of teen surfers during the summer of 1975 from a neighbourhood in Venice nicknamed Dogtown because of it's location in the sprawling urban decayed zone of southern California. Skip Engblom, portrayed by Heath Ledger, the owner of a local surfing shop corners the market on polyurethane wheels that grip almost any surface, starts recruiting some local boys that include Jay Adams, portrayed by Emile Hersh, Tony Alva, portrayed by Victor Rasuk, Tony's sister Kathy, portrayed by Nikki Reed, and Stacy Robinson, who portrays the actual writer of the film, Stacy Peralta. He transforms there surfing skills into an extreme skateboarding team eventually known as the Zephyr Skateboard Team or Z-boys as there are now known in history.

The Z-boys under the guidance of Skip transfer there surfing skills towards that of the skateboard by practicing on drain pipes and empty swimming pools in the area, and there total lack of fear of manoeuvres propels them to new heights unheard of in the surfing world and which eventually lead them away from there roots and there mentor.

In a skater boy’s dream come true, the true story of skateboarding legends the Z-Boys comes to the big screen with the TriStar Picture’s release "Lords of Dogtown." As accompaniment to the gripping story is the Geffen Records soundtrack CD, which boasts classic songs by artists like Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, David Bowie, Ted Nugent, the Allman Brothers, T Rex, plus new recordings by Social Distortion and Rise Against. The lead track is Social Distortion cover of the Clash’s 1979 classic, "Death or Glory." Rock ‘n’ roll has always been a huge factor in skater culture, and the new CD reflects that, old school style. In addition to the Social Distortion track, Geffen band Rise Against also contributes a cover of Black Flag’s blistering punk anthem, "Nervous Breakdown." The bulk of the CD consists of vintage classics, including: the Jimi Hendrix Experience, "Fire;" David Bowie’s "Suffragette City;" Nazareth with "Hair of the Dog;" the Stooges, "T.V. Eye;" Foghat, "I Just Want To Make Love To You;" Ted Nugent’s "Motor City Madhouse;" T Rex with "20th Century Boy;" Joe Walsh, "Turn To Stone;" Sweet, "Fox On The Run;" the Allman Brothers Band, "One Way Out;" Rod Stewart’s "Maggie May;" Deep Purple, "Space Truckin’;" Sparklehorse, "Wish You Were Here;" and Iggy Pop’s "Success." "Lords of Dogtown," starring Emile Hirsch, Victor Rasuk and John Robinson and Heath Ledger, tells the story of a group of teenage surfers from a tough neighborhood known as "Dogtown" in Venice, California who pioneered a revolutionary new style of skateboarding in the 1970’s. Riding the waves at the Pacific Ocean Park pier, the Z-Boys, known for their aggressive style and hard street attitude, combined the death-defying moves of surfing with the art of skateboarding and became overnight sensations and local legends. With empty pools as their canvas, the Z-Boys paved the way to what is today referred to as "extreme sports," and created a lifestyle that became a worldwide counterculture phenomenon.

In the early 1970s, a group of young surfers from a tough neighborhood south of Santa Monica took up skateboards and offhandedly changed the world. At least it appears so after watching Dogtown and Z-Boys, a documentary about how twelve "Z-Boys" (including one girl) resuscitated a dead sport and created a lifestyle that spread infectiously to become a worldwide counterculture phenomenon, namely high-flying "vert" (i.e. vertical) skateboarding and punk rock abandon. Director Stacy Peralta, one of the original Z-Boys, and Craig Steyck, the photographer whose publicity first made them famous, would have you believe that with empty pools as their springboard, the clan single-handedly carved a niche that grew into what is now referred to as "extreme sports" (snowboarding seems particularly implicated). Degrees of accuracy aside, the hoard of original footage Peralta and Steyck have access to makes for an engaging portrait of "accidental revolutionaries" whose mythology as expressed by themselves (all but one of the original crew give extensive interviews) and those they influenced (including Henry Rollins, Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam, and Sean Penn, who narrates) is far more entertaining than any evenhanded version could ever hope to be. --Fionn Meade
