Heath Ledger Dark Knight opens with Bruce Wayne, portrayed by Christian Bale as the Batman, who continues to fight crime in Gotham City and aided by Lt. Jim Gordan, portrayed by Gary Oldman, and Harvey Dent, portrayed by Aaron Eckhart, a District Attorney who is disgusted by the crime wave that has laid siege to Gotham and has become nicknamed the White Knight of Gotham.

The Batman soon discovers that a psychopath only known as the Joker, portrayed by Heath Ledger, has taken over all organized crime within the city after the fall of Carmine Falcone, despite the appearance of the new head of crime, Salvatore Maroni, portrayed by Eric Roberts who has taken the reigns as the only remaining crime boss. The Joker has decided to kill each of the new heads one by one in dramatic and unforgettable ways and whose plan is to terrify the citizens and throw the city into chaos as well as panic and finishing off by killing the Batman.

In a parking garage, Scarecrow, portrayed by Cillian Murphy, who escaped the Batman earlier, is seen negotiating with a Russian mob over the sale of some of his paranoia-inducing drugs, but the sale is interrupted when some of Gotham's citizens dressed as Batmen begin shooting at them. After he gases one of them with his mind-altering drug he realizes that none are the real Batman but suddenly the Bat mobile crashes through a barricade and the Scarecrow realises that his fate has been sealed and the Batman leaves him subdued to be rounded up by Gotham police.

Harvey Dent later meets Lt. Gordon, and they both express their distrust for those that are working in each other's offices including unknown corrupt officers. Dent asks Gordon about his involvement with the Batman and tells him he wants to meet and later they light up the bat signal, and the Batman suddenly appears. As Dent and Gordon blame one another for the current crime wave including leaks from corrupt officers in the other's departments they explain to the Batman that he is under no one's jurisdiction and that they need him to force one of the mobsters to give out all the other mob members' names to end the crime wave. Batman agrees and disappears.

After the Batman captures one of the mob members Lau, portrayed by Chin Han, he is interrogated by Rachel Dawes, portrayed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, along with Dent and Gordon they end up with the information they needed. Gordon appears at Moroni's restaurant later and the police rush in to arrest all of the mob members in attendance, but not before they have hired the Joker to help them. The Joker makes a promise to Gotham City that people will die every day unless the Batman reveals his identity.

The Joker proceeds with his plan and begins killing numerous police officers and officials and as a result the Batman decides that he should turn himself in to stop the killings. Dent disagrees with his choice, and holds a press conference to announce that it is actually he who is the Batman. Dent's plan is to draw the Joker out of hiding so that the real Batman can capture him, which works after Dent is arrested for being the vigilante and the Joker attempts to murder him.

After his capture and interrogation by the Batman, the Joker reveals that there were many more corrupt officers than Batman himself was aware of, and that both Dent and Rachel have been kidnapped after which he makes a daring escape and the Batman has to choose which person to save, as there isn't enough time to do both. Both the Batman and Gordon split the task, and head off to two separate locations.

The Batman arrives at the address that the Joker had told him Rachel was at, but when he opens the door, he finds Dent instead, who screams at him for not saving Rachel. Gordon arrives at his location but the warehouse explodes with Rachel inside. As the Batman saves Dent by carrying him out of the warehouse the explosion ignites oil that had saturated his face during his capture, and he gets lit on fire and then taken to Gotham General Hospital. Gordon visits Dent in the hospital, and leaves him the two-headed coin that they found at Rachel location. One side of the coin is still shiny, while the other side is scraped and burnt.

Meanwhile Wayne's accountant Reese, portrayed by Joshua Harto, who seemingly has discovered Wayne’s dual identity, appears on a news show and claims to be able to tell the world who Batman is, but before he can, the Joker calls in to the show and says that if Reese is not killed within 60 minutes, he is going to blow up a hospital, because he doesn't want Reese to ruin his fun.

The police start evacuating all of the hospitals in Gotham City but when they get to Gotham General, a police officer attempts to evacuate a nurse in Dent's room, which turns out to be the Joker, who instead kills the officer. Joker unties Dent and gives him a gun and Dent, now bent on revenge and believing everything in the world should be decided by chance, flips the double-headed coin to decide whether or not to shoot the Joker. The coin lands on the clean side and the Joker and Dent leave Gotham General just as it blows up. The Joker then appears on TV and lets the people of Gotham City know that it now belongs to him, and that anyone that does not want to be a part of his end game should leave.

After Batman discovers the location of the Joker, he notifies Gordon and heads towards the building. In the meantime Dent in his new persona begins tracking down all the dirty cops and killing them one by one. When the Batman finally confronts the Joker, who is about to cause another explosion, the Batman gets the upper hand but instead of allowing the Joker to die, saves him. The Joker reveals to him that his real plan was to engineer the fall of Gotham's White Knight, Harvey Dent, since that would introduce much more chaos when a good man like Dent is shown descending into evil. Batman heads off to find Harvey, while the SWAT team captures the Joker.

When the Batman arrives and sees Dent with hostages he tells him to stop, and to blame the actual people responsible for Rachel's capture instead of murdering innocents. Dent flips the coin for the Batman, which lands on the dirty, scarred side, and Dent shoots him and just as he is about to shoot one of the hostages the Batman uninjured tackles him and they fall off of the building together.

As Gordon goes to check on the Batman, he agrees that the Jokers plan worked by turning the best of them, Harvey Dent to evil, and Batman tells Gordon that the people of Gotham must never know about his killings, and to instead blame them on the Batman, thereby turning him into an outlaw in the eyes of the people of Gotham. This way, the Joker cannot win and his plan has failed. Gordon agrees and issues an immediate warrant and as the Gotham Police begin to chase the Batman, he escapes and speeds out into the night becoming The Dark Knight.
