Four Feathers Movie

The Four Feathers movie is an adventure war drama based on the 1902 novel by A.E.W. Mason and adapted for the screen by Michael Schiffer and Hossein Amini, directed by Shekhar Kapur and filmed in both England and Morocco between October 2000 to March 2001 for an estimated budget of $80,000,000 and released on September 20th, 2002. Although the Four Feathers movie only grossed $18,000,000 during its United States theatre run, it was eventually released on DVD on February 18th, 2003.

The Four Feathers movie is set in Sudan during the British army's Gordon Relief Expedition and tells the story of Harry Feversham, portrayed by Heath Ledger, a British officer of the Royal Cumbrians infantry regiment and the son of British General Feversham, portrayed by Tim Pigott-Smith, accused of extreme cowardice.

While celebrating his engagement to Ethne, portrayed by Kate Hudson, Harry Feversham is told that his regiment is being dispatched to rescue British General Charles Gordon from the Egytptian ruled Sudan. After conversing with Jack Durrance, portrayed by Wes Bentley, Harry decides to resign his commission because he does not agree with the mission. As a result of his decision 3 of his fellow officers brand him a coward and present him with 3 white feathers. He also loses the support of his fiancee, who in turn, presents him with a fourth white feather after which he is also disowned by his father.

In an effort to redeem himself Harry travels in disguise to the Sudanese desert and meets a Sudanese warrior named Abou Fatma, portrayed by Djimon Hounsou, who helps him to locate his old regiment that has since been dispatched on the rescue mission. After locating his old comrades, and during a battle between the British officers and Mahdist rebels, Harry rescues the one friend who never turned his back on him, Jack Durrance, who informs him that the rebels have captured another comrade. Harry makes his way to the prison and allows himself to be captured but with the help of Abou, escapes from the rebels after saving his comrade. Will learning of his heroics put him back in good graces with his other comrades, his fiancée and his father?

The seventh filming of A.E.W. Mason's classic 1902 novel, this near-epic production of The Four Feathers looks great, sounds great, and feels rather average. It would be difficult to diminish the rousing adventure of Mason's novel, and director Shekhar Kapur (Elizabeth) certainly gets more bang for his buck, with massive battle scenes and rugged, sun-baked harshness enhanced by Robert Richardson's masterful cinematography. Kapur preserves the universal appeal of the story, set in the 1880s, in which a promising soldier (Heath Ledger) resigns on the eve of battle in Britain's Sudanese campaign, is labeled a coward by his fiancée (Kate Hudson), and redeems himself by posing as a Muslim warrior to rescue his best friend Jack (Wes Bentley) from certain death in the desert. For all its heroics, however, the film seems oddly passionless; Djimon Hounsou is excellent as Ledger's desert guardian, but these young Hollywood stars lack the authenticity of Zoltan Korda's 1939 film, which remains the definitive version. --Jeff Shannon
