The Casanova movie opens in 1753 Venice, Italy and Giacomo Casanova, portrayed by Heath Ledger is unknowing to her, in love with Francesca Bruni, portrayed by Sienna Miller, a writer who uses the ghost name Bernardo Guardi to write feminist books and argues for women's right using another name, Dr. Giordano de Padua. Francesca is betrothed to Paprizzio, portrayed by Oliver Platt, a man she has never met through an arranged marriage set up by Francesca's mother Andrea, portrayed by Lena Olin.

Casanova himself is engaged to Victoria, portrayed by Natalie Dormer, because The Doge, the ruler of the city, portrayed by Tim McInnerny, but sympathetic to Casanova, has asked him to soon marry or be exiled from the city because of his legendary promiscuity with women and a fear that the church will soon retaliate. Victoria is in love with Giovanni Bruni, portrayed by Charlie Cox, who is Francesca's brother.

Upon Paprizzio's arrival to meet Francesca for the first time, Casanova lies to him and says that the hotel he has booked for himself is closed and persuades him to stay with him by telling him that he is actually Bernardo Guardi. While Paprizzio stays at Casanova's house, Casanova visits Francesca, pretending to be him.

During there first meeting, Casanova confesses his love and true identity to Francesca, which angers her, and Casanova is immediately arrested by Catholic Church representative Pucci, portrayed by Jeremy Irons, for crimes against sexual morality. Casanova proves his love to Francesca during his trial by pretending to be Bernardo Guardi and she stands and confesses to the crime to prove her love in return. As a result they are both sentenced to be hanged in the Piazza San Marco but just as the sentence is about to be carried out, an announcement is brought forth by a Cardinal on behalf of the Pope that may work to there advantage and allow there love to blossom.

Heath ledger stars as the legendary casanova the worlds most notorious seducer a master of disguise and wit. It was said no woman could resist his amorous charms. But casanova has finally met his match in the fiery intelligent beauty francesca. Studio: Buena Vista Home Video Release Date: 01/11/2008 Starring: Heath Ledger Jeremy Irons Run time: 111 minutes Rating: R

A light farce dressed up as a lush 18th century costume drama, Casanova gives a fictional spin to the exploits of history's most rakish seducer of women. As played by Heath Ledger, this Casanova bears no resemblance to Donald Sutherland's unrepentant portrayal in Fellini's Casanova, filmed 30 years earlier. Instead, the great ladies' man of Venice is just biding time by bedding women, waiting for true love (and the return his long-absent mother) to settle down into blissful monogamy. He finds true love in Francesca (Sienna Miller), a feminist who initially resists Casanova's affections while director Lasse Hallström serves up a variety of lightweight subplots including Casanova's flight from the Vatican's inquisitor (Jeremy Irons); a host of mistaken identities involving, among others, the portly "Lard King of Genoa" (played with scene-stealing perfection by Oliver Platt in a blubbery fat suit); and the romantic negotiations of Francesca's mother (played by Hallström’s wife, Lena Olin) and a young bumbler named Giovanni with his own promising future as a lover of women. It all adds up to a good-looking and harmless diversion that barely warrants an R-rating, and it makes a fine double-bill with the more enjoyable Dangerous Beauty, another Venetian lover’s tale that was also blessed by the presence of Platt, who gives this Casanova the majority of its entertainment value. --Jeff Shannon

The action in this tale about the 18th century adventurer and (at least in popular lore) seducer is set in Cassanova's native Venice in the mid-1700s, so it makes sense that the soundtrack would be loaded with Baroque pieces. The Venice-based Tomaso Albinoni is featured prominentaly, along with heavyweights such as Antonio Vivaldi, Jean-Baptiste Rameau, and George Frideric Handel, and lesser-known composers such as Arcangelo Corelli, Francesco Durante, and Alexandre Desplat. Er, actually Desplat is a contemporary French film composer who also released his score for the couldn't-be-more-different Syriana shortly after Casanova came out. Of the two pieces he penned here, "A Venetian Virgin" is in pure Baroque style, while "Inquisitor Pucci" betrays a more modern film-music vibe. Meanwhile, orchestrator Sonny Kompanek rearranged a couple of the tracks and authored the tense "The Plume's Nom Is Casanova," which doesn't sound embarrassing sandwiched between pieces by Albinoni and Handel. Overall, it would have been nice to get longer excerpts from the pieces--many feel chopped into too-small fragments--but the music's innate grace and elegance can't be beat for a period film. Or for any film, really: Vivaldi's Concerto in C Major ("The Doge's Decree") will be familiar to buffs, who will remember it featuring prominently in the Dustin Hoffman-¬Meryl Streep showdown Kramer vs. Kramer back in 1979. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
